MOLD MAKING
Each tile mold made from the "MASTER PLASTER" mold is unique in it's detailing; therefore, if you were to order, let's say, more than one "MAN IN THE MOON" sun catcher, you would likely find that they had different pupils in the eyes, and/or more or less stars. It's no fun making each mold exactly like the one before! SLUMPING Before the invention of "fusing glass" in the mid 1980's, each color of glass would require a different firing schedule and temperature. All of the colors I use have the same co-efficient of expansion (COE) which means they can all be fired at the same temperature. The trick was to discover the exact temperature and length of 'soak time' required to get the design details. And that, is a trade secret! Having worked in clay for over 30 years I was used to spending about $400.00 a ton for my raw material. A ton of fusing glass would cost around $11,000.00! This is what makes research and development so expensive. |
