Many people can remember plucking one of these blossoms and sucking out the sweet nectar--a real meal for an insect with a long proboscis. Here I have depicted the buds, and blossoms, plus a cross section of the common yellow and white, garden variety Lonicera Periclymenum. When the flowers are white the anthers (male) are ripe, when the flowers are yellow the stigmas (female) are receptive; this prevents self fertilization.
